Album update # 2 – Entomology

by Reggie Barnes on February 6, 2010

I would like to announce the title of my debut album: Entomology. The title was suggested by my good friend Jeff Lipner who is also helping me stay on track with the production. It’s shaping up to be very dark and moody with a hint of experimentalism. To give you an idea of the musical direction I’m posting some clips of what’s in the works.

Clip 1 is the opening sequence of the song Mantis. It was built with my Roland JP-8080 along with drums programmed thru GigaStudio.

Clip 2 is also an opening sequence. This is from the song Stinkbug.  The shimmering sound was made from reversing a violin ensemble and adding heavy reverb and filtering.

The clips haven’t been mixed or processed other than what was done to create the sounds themselves. After mixing they could take a lighter or darker turn 😉

First of all I’d like to say hat’s off to you for getting your work out to the world.
I hope giving a peice of yourself will inspire others to do the same. I promise to get the photos taken next time you are in the states. I want to give a peice of myself also via photography. So we got some work to do.

Thank you everybody!! GoodNight!!

Digging the intros very atmoshperic and mood setting. I think with both you are setting up a tone that is providing an emotional snapshot into the upcoming lyrics. Mantis especially is very succesful in the fact that the intro take me right into the thick of the outdoors. Great job in capturing those sounds and doing a fantastic job of recreating them synthetically.

You hit the nail right on the head. A mood setting introduction is what these songs required. The lyrics needed a proper vehicle and I’m hoping I chose correctly. I thought about using actual outdoor samples on Mantis but figured synthetic was the way to go…
